Okay… not that simple. But simple enough for any kid with the bare basic proficiency
Or, you could read it aloud to a younger child, that works too.
My nieces (5 and 2.5) request this book often enough. I’m not sure what grabs them – the opposites, Fred’s plain bad luck, the silly problem and solution at the end – but they do like it a lot.

I bought this book for my wife who remembered having it read to her by her parents when she was a child. The book was exactly like she remembered, except for the fact that now it is in a hard back edition. We even bought an extra copy to give to her parents. They couldn’t believe that we found it! Thanks Amazon.com for helping my wife revisit some great childhood memories. Great children’s book! Great illustrations! Worth every penny!

My 2 1/2 yr old loves this book! It is a great bedtime read. It teaches opposites and colors, and it’s one I don’t mind reading over and over again. It also conveys that these two dogs are great friends, even though they have totally opposite preferences.

My little girl loves this story, it’s a simple, easy to understand yet entertaining story. I also found it useful for teaching her words, on each page I would ask her to find things for me or I would point at something and aske her to tell me what it was. She thoroughly enjoyed this game and learned a lot of new words through playing it.
