This is the best book by far for kids and adults to learn the most common AKC breeds. It is one of the resources used by 4-H when asking Dog Showmanship and Dog Knowledge Bowl questions. Plus it’s just a fun and interesting book with colored pictures of each dog, layed out so it’s not like you’re studying but just enjoying a read. Highly recommend.

This History of dog breeds by AKC is simple, down to earth and packed with easy to assimilate information for all ages. And fast reading.. I got two of them and made flash cards of all the dog breeds!

This is a great book that devotes a page to every AKC-recognized dog breed. It gives a brief history, major characteristics, and a short story about a famous or interesting dog for each breed. Pages are all full color with big, clear photos. The book strikes a perfect balance between providing good information while not getting too in-depth. I borrowed this from the library with my five year old in mind, but my seven year old is the one who can’t put it down. I am here to buy her very own copy. This should be #1 on the list for any young dog lover!
Edited to note: When we got our recently purchased copy from Amazon, my daughter noticed that there were several breeds listed which hadn’t been in the library’s older copy. This is a new edition and has been updated to include all recently AKC-accepted breeds.
